Hes come a long way. He started in 1979 by digging trenches for $2.65 an hour at a San Fernando Valley pool company and then set out to learn plumbing and masonry. Today, he and four partners own Teserra, which calls itself Builders of Exceptional Outdoor Living. According to Bob, We started out as a swimming pool company. It was a successful office of California Pools and Spas. We re-branded two years ago because we wanted to have a brand that could encompass the whole outdoor environment, and we wanted to grow beyond our Coachella Valley territory. We opened an office in Orange County about a year ago, and it is becoming successful. We are working in south Orange County mostly. A number of our customers in this area also had homes in south Orange County. One of our favorite customers, the Harrises, invited us to do their outdoor environment inCrystal Cove. When asked about his biggest mistakes Bob replied, Not realizing that this downturn was going to be as big as it is. We estimated the downturn would be about 20 percent or so, and it ended up being far greater than that of our business. Weve had to reduce expenses, including staff. We now realize itis a deeper and longer problem than we anticipated in 2006. We dont anticipate it ending for a year and a half. Image via teseraoutdoors Should You Pursue an Invention? Posted: 13 Apr 2008 10:52 PM CDT You have been thinking about an idea for months or maybe years. You feel like you have a good idea, your family and friends have told you that you have a good idea and you are passionate and optimistic about the success possibilities. Regardless of your excitement, you would still like to know if your idea is really going to succeed in the marketplace. You would like to atleast gain some reassurance that success will happen so that you donБ=80=99t have to go through the work of inventing if your idea isnБ=80=99t going to make it. What should you do? Research Before you spend any time or money developing your idea, including meeting with a patent attorney, take some time to conduct your own informal market research. For starters, ask yourself some basic questions to ascertain whether your invention really fills a need and if there is a substantial customer base that would purchase your invention. Some inventors may solve a problem that is unique to them, but when they look at the market overall, they may realize that although itБ=80=99s a good idea, only a limited number of people share their problem, thereby limiting the market opportunity. Patent If you are still feeling passionate and optimistic about your invention after conducting some basic market research, you may now want to consider arranging for patent research to be performed on your idea. I would suggest that you consult with a registered patent attorney or patent search firm to perform and discuss the search with you. Although you can perform a preliminary patent search on your own, utilizing a professional skilled in this areashould yield better results.
